The Courtauld Returns: London's Jewel-Box of Impressionism Reopens

After a major modernisation, the Courtauld Gallery reopened in late 2021, its incomparable Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces looking better than ever.

Tucked into Somerset House, the Courtauld Gallery holds one of Britain's most ravishing small collections — Manet's 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergère', Van Gogh's bandaged 'Self-Portrait', Cézanne, Degas, Seurat and more. In November 2021 it reopened after a sweeping modernisation project.

The redevelopment refreshed the historic rooms, improved access and light, and let the paintings breathe. For visitors, it was a chance to rediscover works that have shaped how we picture modern art itself.

Compact, dazzling and deeply loved, the renewed Courtauld is proof that you don't need acres of galleries to leave people speechless — just the right pictures, beautifully shown.
