Tutankhamun's New Home: The Grand Egyptian Museum Opens

After more than two decades and over $1 billion, the Grand Egyptian Museum opened beside the Pyramids of Giza in November 2025 — the world's largest archaeological museum.

More than twenty years in the making and costing over a billion dollars, the Grand Egyptian Museum finally opened to the public in November 2025, a mile from the Pyramids of Giza. It is the largest archaeological museum on earth.

Its crown jewels are the Tutankhamun galleries, displaying all 5,398 objects from the boy king's tomb together for the first time since Howard Carter unearthed them in 1922 — including the golden death mask.

Delayed by revolutions, a pandemic and regional turmoil, the museum's grand opening drew dignitaries from dozens of countries. Egypt called it 'Egypt's gift to the world'.
