Lee Miller: From Surrealist Muse to Fearless War Photographer

Tate Britain's 2025 retrospective traced the extraordinary life of Lee Miller — model, Surrealist, and one of the most daring photographers of the Second World War.

Few lives contained as many lives as Lee Miller's. Tate Britain's 2025 retrospective followed her from fashion model and Surrealist muse in 1920s Paris to a fearless photojournalist who documented the Blitz, the liberation of Paris, and the horrors of Dachau and Buchenwald.

With around 250 prints — many never previously shown — the exhibition revealed both her poetic, Surrealist eye and her unflinching wartime courage, including the famous image of Miller in Hitler's own bathtub.

For decades her astonishing archive lay forgotten in an attic. The show confirmed her place among the defining photographers of the 20th century.
