An Opera on a Fake Beach Wins Venice's Golden Lion

Lithuania's 'Sun & Sea (Marina)' — a climate-change opera staged on an artificial beach — won the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale.
The surprise star of the 2019 Venice Biennale was a beach. Lithuania's pavilion, 'Sun & Sea (Marina)', invited visitors to look down from a balcony onto an indoor stretch of sand, where sunbathers lazily sang of holidays, exhaustion and a warming planet.
Created by Rugilė Barždžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė and Lina Lapelytė, the gentle, eerie opera turned a day at the seaside into a quiet meditation on climate catastrophe — and won the Biennale's top prize, the Golden Lion.
Its genius was its lightness: no lectures, no shock tactics, just ordinary people singing in the sun while, almost unnoticed, the world overheats.
