A Museum Under a Floating Dome: Louvre Abu Dhabi at Five

By 2022 the Louvre Abu Dhabi had spent five years as the Arab world's leading universal museum, its 'rain of light' dome a global landmark.
When the Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017 beneath Jean Nouvel's vast latticed dome, it was a bold experiment: a 'universal museum' in the Gulf, sharing its name (and loans) with Paris. By 2022 it had become one of the region's defining cultural institutions.
Its great silver dome filters sunlight into a dappled 'rain of light' over galleries that tell a single, interwoven story of human creativity across civilisations — from ancient artefacts to Leonardo, Monet and beyond.
Part of Abu Dhabi's transformation into a cultural destination, the museum showed how the map of the art world keeps being redrawn — with the Gulf increasingly at its centre.
