A Room of Her Own: The Louvre Plans a New Home for the Mona Lisa

Facing record crowds, the Louvre unveiled a sweeping 'New Renaissance' renovation in 2025 — including a dedicated, separately ticketed room for the Mona Lisa.
The world's most-visited museum admitted in 2025 that it was creaking under its own popularity. With millions jostling each year for a glimpse of the Mona Lisa, France announced a major 'New Renaissance' overhaul of the Louvre.
At its heart is a plan to give Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece a dedicated, separately accessed room, easing the crush in the Salle des États and creating a new entrance to relieve the famous glass pyramid.
The ambitious, multi-year project aims to make a visit calmer and more humane — proof that even the greatest museums must keep reinventing themselves for the crowds that love them.
