Bigger and Rehung: MoMA Reopens After a $450m Expansion

In 2019 New York's Museum of Modern Art reopened after a vast expansion, rehanging its collection to tell a broader, more global story of modern art.

In October 2019, New York's Museum of Modern Art reopened after a $450-million expansion that added a third more gallery space. But the bigger change was philosophical.

MoMA tore up its tidy, canonical story of modern art and rehung the whole collection, mixing media and eras and making far more room for women, artists of colour and voices from beyond Europe and America.

Picasso now hung near lesser-known contemporaries; the galleries promised to keep reshuffling. It was an influential signal that even the temple of modernism was rethinking whose story it tells.
