The Endless Tug-of-War Over the Parthenon Marbles

A diplomatic spat in 2023 reignited the centuries-old dispute over whether the British Museum should return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.
Few cultural arguments are as old or as heated as the fate of the Parthenon Marbles — the magnificent ancient sculptures removed from Athens by Lord Elgin in the early 1800s and held in the British Museum ever since.
In November 2023 the row flared again when a planned meeting between the British and Greek prime ministers was abruptly cancelled amid the dispute, thrusting the question back into headlines.
Greece insists the sculptures belong in Athens, beside the temple they once adorned; the British Museum points to law and stewardship. Quiet talk of long-term 'partnership' loans continues — but the marbles, for now, stay put.
