Spain's Treasure House: The Prado Turns 200

In 2019 Madrid's Museo del Prado celebrated its 200th anniversary — two centuries as the home of Velázquez, Goya and the glories of Spanish painting.
In 2019 the Museo del Prado in Madrid marked 200 years since it first opened its doors, in 1819. Few museums can rival its riches: this is the house of Velázquez's 'Las Meninas', Goya's 'Black Paintings' and a peerless collection of Spanish art.
The bicentenary brought a year of special exhibitions and events, celebrating an institution that sits at the very heart of Spain's cultural identity.
From Titian and Bosch to El Greco and Murillo, the Prado preserves a vision of European painting at its most intense and dramatic — and at 200, it remains one of the world's essential museums.
