Brazil's Great Survey: The São Paulo Bienal Returns

The 34th São Paulo Bienal, one of the oldest and most important art events in the Americas, returned in 2021 inside Oscar Niemeyer's modernist pavilion.

Second only to Venice in age and prestige, the São Paulo Bienal is the great showcase of art in the Americas. Its 34th edition opened in 2021 in the sweeping modernist pavilion designed by Oscar Niemeyer in Ibirapuera Park.

Titled 'Though it's dark, still I sing', borrowed from a Brazilian poem, the Bienal threaded together artists from across the globe with a spirit of resilience after a brutal pandemic.

Free to enter and vast in scope, it reaffirmed São Paulo as a powerhouse of the Global South's contemporary art scene.
