Van Gogh's Final Months at the Musée d'Orsay

Van Gogh's Final Months at the Musée d'Orsay

The Musée d'Orsay's acclaimed 2023 exhibition focused on the last, frenetic months Van Gogh spent painting in Auvers-sur-Oise before his death.

In the last 70 days of his life, in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, Vincent van Gogh painted at an almost superhuman pace — around one canvas a day. The Musée d'Orsay's 2023 exhibition gathered these final, feverish works.

Among them were the swirling 'Church at Auvers' and ominous wheatfields under troubled skies — paintings of breathtaking intensity made in the shadow of his decline and death in July 1890.

It was a rare, moving chance to stand inside the closing chapter of one of art's most tragic and beloved lives.
